Different Approaches to Retail Stocktaking
There are several different ways to conduct retail stocktaking. The most common method is to conduct a full physical count of all inventory items. This can be a time-consuming and labour-intensive process, but it is the most accurate way to ensure inventory records are accurate. Due to the time and cost most businesses only undertake full retail stocktakes annually or bi-annually.
Another method of retail stocktaking is to use cycle counting. This involves counting a small percentage of the inventory items on a regular basis. This method is less accurate than a full physical count, but it is less disruptive to the business and can be used to track inventory levels over time.
The two approaches can be combined allowing management to conduct regular cycle counts on high turnover stock and items prone to shrinkage, to ensure fewer surprises when a full annual retail stocktake is completed.
Investment in Technology
